This week we’re visiting the world of the Trylle with the Trylle trilogy by Amanda Hocking. This series, and the Shadowfalls camp series are the two main series that got me into reading young adult fantasy back in middle school. I got my first kindle fire when I was in middle school, and I read this series over and over again for a good while. I could probably quote most of this series.
Switched (book one)
When Wendy Everly was six-years-old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. It isn't until eleven years later that Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. With the help of Finn Holmes, Wendy finds herself in a world she never knew existed - a world both beautiful and frightening, and Wendy's not sure she wants to be a part of it.
Torn (book two)
Wendy knew her life would never be the same. Now she learns there is more to the story. She shares a closer connection to her Vittra rivals than she ever imagined. With the threat of war looming, her only hope of saving the Trylle is to master her magical powers—and marry an equally powerful royal. Torn between her heart and her people, between love and duty, Wendy must decide her fate.
Ascend (book three)
Wendy is facing an impossible choice. The only way to save the Trylle from their deadliest enemy is by sacrificing herself. If she doesn't surrender to the Vittra, her people will be thrust into a brutal war against an unbeatable foe. Everything has been leading to this moment. The future of her entire world rests in her hands.
All of those descriptions are taken straight from Amazon.
Wendy is the main character of these three books, but Amanda Hocking has several other series set in the world of Trylle, like the Kanin chronicles, and the Omte origins.
Hocking does an amazing job with the characters and world building! From the very beginning I felt pulled into Wendy’s world both her human one, and the Trylle. I loved Wendy as a character as well, she was witty, honest, and would do anything for the people she loved. Even some of the side characters have a way of making a lasting impression on you, like Matt, Wendy’s brother, or Rhys, Wendy changing. Word of warning there is a love triangle throughout the series, and I know some people don’t enjoy those, though I find them great!
